ass5Purpose

Create an assignment for your MOOC

Task

Post the information as a comment to this page – or put the text somewhere in the web and post a link to this web page (where you already posted assignment 3, 4 and continue now with assignment 5)

Take this assignment as template and write a short assignment for your future MOOC with the parts: Purpose – Task – Interaction. Try a first version of the assignment and you will get feedback!

If you want to engage with the approach of the e-tivities, which we use as basis for our assignments, you can get more information at the website of Gilly Salmon, who created this concept.

Interaction

(1) Read the assignment carefully and reflect if you understand the task and how you would carry it out. If you have any questions share them in a comment.

(2) Read the examples of assignments of your fellow learners and give them feedback how you understand the assignment.

I like your assignments, especially the first one. It’s an interesting start for the week 🙂 And …. what about the interaction part?

I realized that the tasks were not posted yet. I created the 2nd week’s exercises at the same time, than I saw that 3 separate assignments were created for sending them. Here is tha last part of MOOC4DC:

Task 1: Introduce yourselves by writing us your full name, your sport and the level you compete, as well as your nationality, and country where you live now. How many languages do you speak?

Task 2: After reading the short extract from the EU Guidelines on DC, 2012, tell us in 6-8 sentences what “dual career of athletes” means to you.

Welcome and stay with us by reading the others answers and comments! Subscribe to MOOC4DC!

My comment regarding Week 2 is that I can see two kinds of learners: for one type it might be easy and better to take the information part as it was posted, than for practising the skill, the 3 separate assignments helps this learner to go through the development. For another type of learner it might be easier to make as one assignment and post it in one piece.
Honestly, I don’t now at this moment how to cater both types of learners, because I can understand that the first type likes to progress step-by-step in exercises as well, like it was delivered in Week2, but maybe there should be a solution for those who wish to post in one piece after creating the exercise at one piece.

Dear Judith, we had the type of learner who want to do the assignment in one piece in mind when we invited him or her to create his or her own webpage and put all the parts of the assignments 4,5,6 into one page. Bye, Jutta

    Purpose:
Learners get familiar with the difference between ‘traditional’ course catalogues and online course structure

    Task:
Imagine two scenarios – You are a first year student, who has an idea about the direction of your future studies, but you lack the insight in the curricula and the picking of courses:
    1) You are at the open day of your local university and you find the department you are interested in.
    2) You are abroad/traveling a lot, but you still want to finish your education, therefore you pick a distance learning university.

How would you approach trying to find out more about the study programs and the courses you are interested in?

What do you think about the differences between the approaches, what key/necessary elements of information do you have to be able to find, regardless of the ‘method’ (online vs. in-person)?

    Interaction:
Collecting answers in a forum, and working out approaches and the key/necessary information with the help of a WIKI.

Hi Bence, your task is a very open one. I like open assignments … but … I’m not sure if in my role of learner I would start the discussion. Probably I would need more specific information. So I recommend that you sharpen this assignment, Jutta

Dear Jutta, finally I get around to responding to your feedback! 🙂

Thank you for the input – that is an interesting point, it seems easy to assume that learners in an online environment immediately participate in a discussion.

But in this case, I thought about it a little bit more – I think it could be a possibility to not base everything on the discussion in the beginning, but more towards the end – so learners answer the questions I posted, then the course leader works out a WIKI and collects everything, and then as the last part the group could do a “reflection part”, similar to this MOOC here, about the whole process. That could be a good starting point for later, because the learners still need to get used to the online environment and the communication in this first part. But as soon as they are used to it, maybe more active discussion via forums or video chat could be done!

Ciao Roberto, sorry, but I do not understand this assignment. In my role as learner in your course I read in the section of ‘purpose’ that it’s about my skills and experiences. In ‘task’ you write that I should get to know the others but How? There’s no clear description what I should do, so probably I will not do anything …. Bye, Jutta

PS Reading the other posts and my proposal too, I think that Interaction represents an adding task, which is often the consequence of the real Task, is so it?

    Reply
    1. Jutta Pauschenwein (Post author)

I believe that learning needs more than teacher – learner interaction. Therefore the interaction is an important part of my tasks. In online settings the learners are very happy when they get feedback. Without feedback they get the feeling that nobody is reading there stuff. But often the interaction part seems to be an adding task … is really hard to have an idea for a ‘genuin’ interaction. Bye Jutta PS: In this MOOC it seems that most learners are (partly) reading the answers of the other learners as well. But they very seldom react. In my experience it will get easier to interact during the course of the MOOC. So let’s see how much interaction there will be in week 3 🙂

    GEMRA week 1

    E-tivity 1.1

    Purpose
The purpose of this exercise is, on the one hand, to get to know each other and to get accustomed to this learning environment. On the other hand, it should be some fun to play with stereotypes we have about each other and so get to know each other a little. However, this should lead us to critical reflection about those assumptions we have.

    Task
Please post two pictures. One should represent your home country the way you see it and the second one should represent the way you feel that your country is seen from the outside. Also explain why you have chosen these two pictures.

    Interaction
Comment on at least 3 other posts and reflect on how people think their country is seen by the outside and why.
